Dilip Buildcon to also build Zuari bridge approach roads TNN | Aug 11, 2016, 03.42 AM IST Panaji: Bhopal-based firm Dilip Buildcon Limited (DBL), which bagged the work order for the construction of the new Zuari bridge, has also won the bid to build approach roads on either side of the bridge.
The construction of the approach roads are estimated at around Rs 600 crore.
The approach roads to the new eight-lane cable stay Zuari bridge will stretch up to Siridao on one side and Verna on the other. The contractor will have to complete the construction of the approach roads within 30 months of being awarded the contract, while undertaking maintenance for 48 months.
While the new Zuari bridge will comprise of eight-lanes, the approach roads will taper into four-lane ones on either side.
Official sources informed that DBL has completed the work of soil testing for the new bridge and that construction work on the new Zuari bridge is set to begin as soon as the monsoon recedes from Goa, which is sometime around October.
Work on construction of the bridge and approach roads will be carried out simultaneously. The new bridge will be at least eight meters higher than the existing bridge. Approach roads too, will be constructed at a similar height to allow traffic to align with the bridge.
This will mean that traffic at the different crossroads along the route from Siridao to Verna will pass below the new approach roads. This will help create a sort of expressway for the traffic using the bridge, cutting down the distance from North to South Goa significantly.
"The setting up of work sheds for labourers, etc, has already begun at the site," a source informed.
The new bridge will be constructed at around Rs 620 crore by DBL in a joint venture with Ukrainian company Mostobudivelnyi Zahin Limited. The eight-lane cable stay bridge across River Zuari will 640 m long.
Soil investigation at the site of construction of the bridge was carried out to determine where the columns of the bridge will be located.
As per the conditions of the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH), DBL will have to complete construction of the bridge within a period of three years and will be responsible for the maintenance of the bridge for a period of eight years.
