Chittorgarh city is located in the southern part of the state of Rajasthan, in the northwestern part of India. It is located beside a high hill near the Gambheri River.
Chittorgarh District is located between 23° 32' and 25° 13' north latitudes and between 74° 12' and 75° 49' east longitudes in the southeastern part of Rajasthan state. The district encompasses 10,856 square km (3.17 per cent of the Rajasthan State) area of land. The topography of the district is generally undulating with hills belonging to the Aravali Ranges scattering over the entire region. Four major rivers run through the district, namely Chambal, Banas, Bedach and Jakaharn along with tributaries such as Gambhiri, Barhmani and Gunjali.
Total population of the Chittorgarh district is 1,544,338 (Males - 783,171 and Females - 761,167). This corresponds to 2.25% of the total population of the state. Around 16% of the total district population resides in the urban areas and a large chunk i.e. 83.96% resides in rural areas. Overall literacy rate of the district is 61.71%. The literacy rate in the rural areas is only 49.11% whereas that of urban area is 81.01%.

The Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) is India's largest expressway project. It consists of 5,846 kilometers of four/six lane expressways connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.
The NH-8 Delhi - Mumbai expressway passes through Chittorgarh. This project is almost completed and open.
The North-South-East-West (NSEW) corridor is another India's largest expressway project. The plan is to build 7,300 Km of four/six lane expressways connecting hinterland to 10 major ports.
The NSEW Porbandar - Silchar expressway passes through Chittorgarh. This project is still in process and panned to complete in late 2007.
